NIWA | Hamilton

A contemporary upgrade with both functional and aesthetic appeal.

Location: Hamilton | Size: 4,500m²

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) play a vital role in enhancing New Zealand's aquatic resources, climate insights and weather resilience for the safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

Seeking a modern upgrade of their Hamilton facility, Aspect were trusted to help bring their research centre up to contemporary workplace standards, aligning it with their other facilities nationwide and supporting their staff in being more flexible, collaborative and creative.

The brief was to furnish a 4,500m² space that would house laboratories and visitor facilities on the ground floor, along with office workspaces on the first level.

Additionally, a new storage and workshop building was required to store heavy equipment, facilitate fieldwork and provide sheltered boat storage. This multifaceted project demanded a holistic approach that catered to both the functional needs and aesthetic appeal of NIWA’s team.

In collaboration with NIWA, Warren and Mahoney Architects and TBIG Project Managers, Aspect met the brief with a focus on staff wellness and comfort. We provided a suite of New Zealand-made furniture that seamlessly integrated comfort with durability, all within the project’s budget constraints.

Aspect designed bespoke dive storage units for the NIWA team to store their equipment, as well as our innovative Y-shelving system to carve out different working neighbourhoods.

In the working hub, Zurich 5 workpoints are paired with ergonomic Portone task chairs.

Aspect also supplied furniture for the outdoor patio, providing tables and chairs that invite staff to break away from the working hub and socialise in a relaxed setting.
